AAHI
Accomplishments
In
November 2000, AAHI received a $25,000 capacity building grant
from The California Endowment. This support has enabled the
organization to make significant progress to date, including:
- Internal
infrastructure development and expansion (Executive Committee,
Advisory Council, Five (5) Standing Committees and Six (6)
Health Risk Committees)- See attached Organizational Chart.
- Long-term
goals and objectives in each of the Health Risk areas for
most standing and health risk committees.
- Appointment
of a part-time Executive Director to administer the efforts
of volunteers who work on the AAHI
- Contracted
with a grant-writing consultant, resulting in the submission
of funding requests to 17 private foundations and the Department
of Health and Human Services - Office of Minority Health
(2 funded/3 pending). A 2-year $100,000 grant was funded
by the OMH in October 2001
- Hired
a Part Time AAHI Project Coordinator, December 2001
- Partnered
with the Loma Linda University, Office of Public Health
Practice to provide a needs assessment of health issues
pertaining to African Americans and to identify factors
correlating with successful strategies for improving quality
of health among African Americans.
- Collaboration
with One Legacy and Live & Then Give (organ donor awareness
programs) to conduct outreach to the African American community.
- Sponsored
medical screenings and referrals, community walks and participated
in numerous health education and prevention venues which
were widely covered by the media
- AAHI
model was introduced into the Congressional Record and the
accomplishments, goals and objectives are a part of national
history.
- Appeared
on local cable TV show and had good media coverage in local
newspapers.
- Attracted
attention of State Department of Health Services to collaborate
with them on a heart disease program for San Bernardino
County.
