The
Inland

Medical Society (SBCMS).
The
mission of IWIN is: "To promote public health by
disseminating medical knowledge and information to the general public without

IWIN
is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors/Executive Committee.
IWIN
Programs and Service Overview
Organ
Donor Awareness Program:
Live and Then Give (LTG) is a partnership designed
to improve health and save lives by making more donated organs and tissues available
in the Inland Empire. The San Bernardino County Medical Society, Riverside County
Medical Association, and IWIN implemented this program to increase the number
of pledged donors in the Inland Empire. Over 18,000 California residents are awaiting
organ and tissue donations (those suffering from organ failure, bone defects,
blindness, burns and other conditions). Every week, 76 people die across the nation
waiting for an organ or tissue transplant, which is especially tragic given that
one donor can potentially help more than 50 people.
LTG is a collaborative partner of the Southern California Donate Life Network (SCDLN). A major role of LTG is to promote the state's online organ registry. Activities of LTG and SCDLN include promoting National Minority Donor Awareness Day, and collaborating with the Blood Bank of San Bernardino & Riverside Counties to advertise Donate Life at the Healthy Heritage Wellness Conference - An Interactive Afro-Centric Health Conference at Cal Baptist University. LTG participates annually in the Riverside Adams Kart Track program, brochures are placed in physicians' offices throughout the year, and LTG participates in the Donate Life Rose Parade Float. LTG also collaborates with the Blood Bank and United Organ Transplant Association (UOTA) to have display booths at four local Saturn dealers, to promote Saturn's National Donor Day each February. LTG salutes National Donor Month (April) and collaborates with SCDLN Partners for various presentations throughout the Inland Empire, providing promotional items. Each April, LTG collaborates with SCDLN for the annual organ donor awareness event at the Rancho Cucamonga, Epicenter Quakes game and also provides VA Healthcare Systems with promotional items for their annual health fair display booth.
Physician
Speakers Bureau:
Members
of the San Bernardino County Medical Society
are available to speak at no cost, on various medical and health topics to civic
clubs, organizations, schools and other community groups. Healthy
Lifestyles Award Program:
The
Healthy Lifestyles Award Program is a community partnership initiative of the
San Bernardino County Medical Society and its Alliance, and Inland Wellness Information
Network. The purpose of this program is to encourage school children early in
their formative years, to learn about and develop healthy lifestyles involving
good nutrition, regular exercise, proper hygiene and awareness of the dangers
of smoking, alcohol and drugs. Public
Services and Special Events:
Collaborative
activities with the San Bernardino County Medical
Society (SBCMS) and other medical service providers include: Medical
Museum that displays a collection of medical artifacts and a medical library
with volumes dating back to the 1800’s, open to groups for pre-arranged tours;
Healthy Lifestyle Contest, an annual event for elementary school children providing
cash awards and certificates; "Superheroes Protecting Kids" Crusade
promotes anti-smoking and bicycle safety at events, school assemblies and area
malls.
San Bernardino Medical Reserve Corps (MRC):
IWIN supports the San Bernardino County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) by soliciting financial support for this volunteer organization. The MRC was established in 2003 to provide an organized framework for healthcare professionals and other volunteers to supplement existing local emergency and public health resources in emergency situations such as wildfires, floods, epidemics, acts of terrorism, and natural or man-made disasters. Over the years, a great variety of natural and technological hazards have beset San Bernardino County, including major emergencies declared for earthquakes, wildfires, and train derailments. Our health-care system has barely met local needs for bed-days and emergency room visits for several years, prompting the San Bernardino County Medical Society (SBCMS) to collaborate with other organizations in San Bernardino County to establish a MRC unit. MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, medical technicians, and EMTs. Other community members, such as interpreters, chaplains, office workers, and legal advisors, fill other vital support positions. For additional information go to the website at www.sbcms.org/mrc.
